Reversing truck runs over toddler
A pickup truck backing up in a Waialua driveway ran over a 19-month-old girl yesterday, killing her, police said.
The driver, a 29-year-old Waianae man, was reversing the Ford F-150 truck out of the driveway in the 6700 block of Mamua Place when he struck the girl at about 3:05 p.m., police said.
The girl, also of Waianae, was taken in critical condition to Wahiawa General Hospital where she died at 3:40 p.m., police said. Police would not say whether the girl and the driver were related.
For the year, it was Oahu’s seventh nontraffic fatality, which refers to accidents off public roadways, compared with four at this time last year.
Waialua brush fire burns 100 acres
Firefighters continued last night to battle a brush fire in Waialua that has scorched about 100 acres, destroyed a couple of unoccupied agricultural buildings and closed parts of Farrington Highway through the afternoon.
The fire is on the Kaena side of Kaukonahua Road near Thompson Corner. Flames got as near as 30 yards from some homes in the neighborhood surrounding Waialua High School, Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig said.
About 70 firefighters from 13 engine companies, six tankers and the HFD helicopter were called to the fire, Seelig said.
"They’re still working to establish a perimeter even though it’s 80 percent contained," he said at about 5:30 p.m.
Police shut down Farrington Highway between Kaupe and Kaukonahua roads around noon and rerouted traffic to Thompson Corner. The road was reopened at 7:45 p.m.
