Trying to make a living in the National Football League just got a little harder for Colt Brennan.

As expected, the former record-setting quarterback for the University of Hawaii was released yesterday by the Oakland Raiders. Brennan’s father said that his son will return to their family home in Southern California for a few days, before leaving for Arizona to continue training.

Brennan was cut by the Washington Redskins nearly a month ago and was picked up a week later by the Oakland Raiders.

He hardly played in any of the Raiders’ exhibition games, completing one pass in one attempt for 14 yards.

Brennan and his agent didn’t return phone calls made yesterday by the Star-Advertiser.

Because the start of the season is on Thursday, it will be difficult for Brennan to land a job. All he can do is wait and hope someone selects him to fill a role during the upcoming season.

Entering his third year in the league, Brennan spent most of the first two sidelined by hip injuries. The 27-year-old said earlier this year that he was fully recovered and hoped he could compete for starting time this season.

Brennan was selected by the Washington Redskins in the sixth round of the NFL Draft in 2008 by then-head coach Jim Zorn.

Zorn was let go last year and replaced by Mike Shanahan, who never gave any indication that Brennan would stay in his quarterback rotation.

The Redskins did him a favor by cutting him early, giving him three-plus weeks with the Raiders to show his stuff. He played so sparingly in the preseason, it was clear sticking with Oakland was a long shot.
