Big Island police have requested an autopsy to determine the cause of death of a 52-year-old Kona man who apparently drowned Friday night off Captain Cook.

Bruce Berard of Kailua-Kona was found unresponsive when police responded to an emergency call at 10:15 p.m. Friday.

Beard was night diving with companions when they found him unresponsive in the water. Berard was brought to shore, where his companions attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation. He was taken to Kona Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:47 a.m. Saturday.

The case is classified as a coroner’s inquest.
