Motorcyclist in fatal crash identified
The Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office identified the motorcyclist who was killed early Sunday morning in a one-vehicle accident as 41-year-old John A. Roberts of Kahuku.
Roberts died at the scene of multiple traumatic injuries due to the accident, authorities said.
Police said speed may have been a factor in the 1:10 a.m. crash, which occurred off Kahala Avenue near Kealaolu Avenue, in a dark area.
Police said the motorcyclist was heading east on Kahala, entering a private roadway off Waialae Country Club Road.
The motorcyclist failed to get around a right-hand bend in the roadway, hit the curb and rode onto the grassy edge, police said.
Roberts hit his head on a stone wall, and landed with his motorcycle in the middle of the roadway, police said.
Police said the motorcyclist had open head injuries, as well as internal and bodily injuries. He was not wearing a helmet.
It was the 40th Oahu traffic fatality, compared to 41 at the same time last year.
Drowned diver was Honolulu man
The Medical Examiner’s Office identified a man who apparently drowned while night diving off of Chinaman’s Hat on Saturday night.
Sammy Tominino, 42, of Honolulu, got into trouble and was brought to shore by fellow divers at about 9:47 p.m., officials said.
His friends performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation beside Kamehameha Highway until paramedics arrived.
Tominino was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics at 10:47 p.m., Cheplic said.
Injured hiker rescued in Manoa
Honolulu Fire Department personnel rescued an injured hiker who had fallen 30 feet off the Manoa Falls Trail on Sunday afternoon.
The hiker, identified as a woman in her 50s, apparently slid off the trail, injuring her shoulder and arm, and was unable to climb back up, according to Fire Department spokesman Capt. Terry Seelig.
Rescue personnel assisted the woman into a basket and airlifted her to Manoa District Park, where she was transferred to the care of Emergency Medical Services.
Police look for armed bank robbers
Police are investigating a bank robbery in Waikele involving two masked suspects.
Police said the men, who were armed with handguns, allegedly robbed the Waikele Bank of Hawaii at 3:51 p.m. yesterday after ordering people to lie on the ground.
Autopsy finds no foul play
Preliminary results from an autopsy on California visitor Nola "Becky" Thompson have found no signs of foul play, the Kauai Police Department said yesterday.
The department said her body has no injuries that would have contributed to her death.
Blood toxicology and tissue examinations are pending, along with the final determination of the cause of death, police said.
Thompson’s body was found Friday in a stream bed near a waterfall west of Wailua, Kauai.
Friends staying at a Kauai hotel said Thompson appeared to be agitated. Thompson, from Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif., had recently broken up with her boyfriend of five years.
Her rental car was found Thursday in east Kauai.
