The U.S. Senate has passed a bill sponsored by Hawaii Sen. Daniel Akaka that would require the federal government to write public documents more clearly.
The Plain Writing Act was passed Monday night by unanimous consent. The amended bill now heads back to the U.S. House for final passage.
Akaka calls the act “commonsense reform.”
The island Democrat said Tuesday in a Washington news release that Americans lose time and money because government instructions, forms and other documents are too complicated.
He says people need to be able to understand what documents say in order to hold the federal government accountable.
According to Akaka, writing documents in a way that is clear, will lead to making the government more efficient.
