Driver of truck is killed in bus crash

One man is dead after a collision between a tour bus and a truck yesterday morning on Highway 11 near Milolii on the Big Island.

The collision occurred at about 9:15 a.m. and resulted in the temporary closing of all lanes of the highway.

The driver of the truck was pronounced dead at the scene. Ten passengers on the bus were taken with undisclosed injuries to an area hospital.

No other details are yet available.

Stabbing injures man in Waimanalo

A man in his 20s was taken to a trauma center in critical condition yesterday morning following an apparent stabbing in Waimanalo, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city’s Emergency Services Department.

Paramedics responded to an 8:35 a.m. call to Oluolu Street and treated and transported the man, Cheplic said.

Bicyclist hurt in collision with pickup

The collision of a truck and a bicycle near Pearlridge Center in Aiea left the 53-year-old bicyclist in critical condition, police said.

The man was riding a 21-speed mountain bike when he crossed the intersection of Moanalua Road and Kaamilo Street against the crosswalk signal at 9:24 p.m. Saturday, police said.

The 46-year-old driver of a 1994 Ford F-150 pickup truck did not see the bicyclist enter the intersection, police said.

The collision threw the bicyclist onto the hood of the pickup truck and pinned the bicycle underneath, police said.

Speed and alcohol were not factors on the part of the truck driver, police said. They did not immediately know whether speed and alcohol were factors on the part of the bicycle rider.

Police temporarily closed the intersection to investigate the crash and diverted traffic to alternate streets.

Gun-wielding robber gets no cash

Two employees at a Kaimuki restaurant locked themselves in a back office when a man with a handgun demanded money at about 7:15 p.m. Saturday, police said.

The man left without any money and was being sought by police.

Firefighters extinguish 3-acre blaze

About three acres of brush burned early yesterday morning in the area around Kapaa Middle School on Kauai, officials said.

No one was injured and no structures were threatened.

The fire broke out at around 11 p.m. Saturday below the Olohena and Kaapuni roads intersection.

Kauai firefighters had the blaze under control around 12:31 a.m. yesterday and fully extinguished at 1:15 a.m.

The cause of the fire was unknown.

Following recent brush fires, Kauai fire officials urged people yesterday not to throw lighted cigarettes out of car windows, park on dry grass or leave fires unattended.

Front Street to stay open on Halloween

LAHAINA » Some Lahaina business owners are unhappy about a decision not to close a major street to cars and trucks during this year’s Halloween celebration.

The Maui News reports that county officials have turned down a request to close a section of Front Street on Oct. 31.

The Lahaina Town Action Committee and West Maui Community Association had requested the closure as sort of a compromise to assure a large turnout while still allowing police to control the crowds of people who flock to the event.

But Maui County spokeswoman Mahina Martin says planners had to decline the request because the application was incomplete and did not address community concerns.

Business owners say that in previous years the Halloween party was one of the most profitable nights of the year.

But critics had complained that some revelers had gotten out of hand.
