Pop star Justin Bieber managed to get around town under the radar despite his celebrity. Before concertizing at the Blaisdell Arena Oct. 8 and 9, he sneaked into Avex Honolulu Studios in Hawaii Kai to lay down some vocal tracks. Bieber also visited the Hawaii Kai home of Beth and Duane "Dog" Chapman, stars of A&E’s "Dog, the Bounty Hunter," who were invited to the concert and hung out backstage.

The Bieber-Chapman link was forged last year when Bonnie Jo Chapman, youngest of the Dog’s ohana, ran a Twitter campaign to meet idol Bieber. A meeting in Los Angeles resulted, with Beth Chapman and Patti Mallette, Bieber’s mom, continuing the bond here when they shopped and dined together.

Bieber, meanwhile, had time for fun in the sun (pictured shirtless in board shorts and hair dripping wet in People magazine), and his mom took a Star of Honolulu cruise. "Now Justin wants to go on the cruise on his next visit," said his mom. "He really loves Hawaii and hopes to come back soon." …

ITEMIZATIONS: Japan’s Princess Akiko dined at two Roy’s restaurants here — dinner at Roy’s Hawaii Kai one night, then a specially arranged lunch the next day at Roy’s Waikiki (which normally serves only terrace pupu). …

Singer Christina Aguilera‘s Hawaii trek — she was in the VIP contingent at the Morimoto Waikiki to-do — was partly to dodge the news about her divorce from hubby Jordan Bratman. Apparently Aguilera had yoga, surfing, hikes and parties to help forget her split. …

Dean Pitchford, the Oscar-winning composer ("Fame," "Footloose"), is the lone islander nominated in the 2010 Songwriters Hall of Fame, which salutes both nonperforming tunesmiths and performer-songwriters. Let’s hear it for the boy, to borrow from his hit song. …

Diamond Head Theatre’s "Crazy for You" should go down on record as one of the theater’s finest shows, thanks to the chemistry between leads David Spangenthal (Bobby) and Kathryn Mariko Lee (Polly), with bickering banter not unlike the Steve McGarrett-Danny Williams relationship on "Hawaii Five-0." The offstage team — director John Rampage, musical director Phil Hildalgo, choreographer Caryn Yee, set designer Willie Sabel, costumer Karen G. Wolfe, lighting designer Stephen Clear and sound designer Mikel J. Humerickhouse all deserve kudos, too. …

FAMILY TIES: Afatia and Nicole Thompson of the performing Tihati ohana welcomed their fourth keiki on Oct. 10 at Kapiolani Medical Center: Emelia "Cha" Kahemalani (the "Cha" is after kupuna Cha Thompson; the Hawaiian name translates to "a call from heaven") was 8 pounds, 1 ounce and 21 inches. "My 15th grandchild," said Cha, "and the only grandbaby I was not present for during the birthing." Reason: She was hosting a wrap party at her Portlock house for Mayor Peter Carlisle‘s campaign crew. …

UP IN THE AIR: "The Brothers Cazimero: At Home in the Islands," which aired in September on KGMB, will be shown on Hawaiian Airlines’ mainland flights in December, and eventually on Hawaiian’s Japan and Philippines routes. The documentary of the 35-year career of Robert and Roland Cazimero — produced by Phil Arnone for Hawaii News Now — also will be available on high-definition DVD in November, which sounds like a dandy Christmas gift. …
