The Oahu Interscholastic Association swept through the HHSAA Billy Tees Bowling Championships at Lihue Lanes yesterday.
None of the other leagues came close to denying the OIA, with the league earning the top seven spots in the girls individual competition and the top four in the boys’ individual contest.
It was the first time the OIA took all four trophies since 2003, when Cy Hiyane and Moanalua won the boys competition and Shaina Carnate and Kapolei won for the girls.
Kapolei girls repeat
The Kapolei girls bowling team defended its state title, beating Punahou by 450 pins.
The Hurricanes cruised to their second straight state championship behind Shaianne Yockman, who finished second to Tammi Sakaguchi of Kalaheo for medalist honors, and third-place finisher Valarie Ibarra. Kapolei beat Kalani by 264 pins last year.
Sakaguchi held on for the top spot among individuals, but Yockman didn’t make it easy for her to become Kalaheo’s first state champion in bowling. Sakaguchi led by 66 pins going into the last game and kept it between the gutters to roll a 159, beating Yockman by 18 pins. Yockman’s 207 in the final game was the round’s highest score.
Patacsil holds on
Kailua’s Austin Patacsil built a big lead and sat on it to become the boys’ individual champion, knocking down 1,940 pins over nine games to beat Aaron Yamamoto of Kalani by 77. Yamamoto finished strong, rolling a 279 in his eighth game and finishing with a 254 before running out of frames. Patacsil’s finishing games of 184 and 195 held up after blowing away the field with scores over 200 in six of his first seven games.
Pearl City won the boys team title by 62 pins over Mililani, beating the Trojans in each of the final five games. Nicolas Azumi led Pearl City with his third-place finish, followed by Evan Hayashi (ninth), Kevin Oshiro (12th), Derek Suefuji (13th) and Jonathan Carino (18th). It was the second state title in three years for the Chargers. Defending champion Hawaii Baptist finished fourth behind Kalani.
