Infant’s death is under investigation

Police are investigating the death on Sunday of a 4-month-old Iroquois Point boy.

The medical examiner performed an autopsy of the infant yesterday, but the cause has not yet been released and will likely be deferred pending further studies, which could take six to eight weeks.

The boy’s father was watching him while his mother was napping, police said. The father went to wake him at about 6 p.m. and found the child unconscious. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was started, police said.

He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.

Boy’s drunken attack leads to arrest

Police arrested a 16-year-old boy, who was armed with a knife, on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening and third-degree assault after he allegedly punched a 16-year-old girl in the face in Waikiki.

Police said the boy was drunk when he approached a group of people he did not know at about 11:45 p.m. Sunday.

The teen allegedly pulled out a large knife and struck the girl with a fist, which held the knife, police said.

Police in the area caught the teen and arrested him.

The girl complained of pain to her face but refused treatment, police said. The boy was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center and treated for an abrasion, police said.

Salt Lake man accused of sex assault

A Salt Lake man, 42, sexually assaulted a woman, 33, at 12:53 a.m. yesterday at a Likini Street home, police said.

Police found the man and arrested him on suspicion of first-degree sexual assault and kidnapping.

The case is pending a Sex Abuse Treatment Center examination and interview.

Fall from Waikiki condo kills man

A 20-year-old man died after a fall from a Waikiki condominium yesterday. The man was found unconscious with multiple injuries in the condo’s driveway.

Police said he was pronounced dead at about 2:16 a.m. yesterday with no signs of foul play.

The Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet identified the man, but found he died due to injuries from the fall.

Check-forging suspect apprehended

Police said an alleged check forger made the mistake of returning to the same bank to cash fake checks on Sunday.

The Waianae man cashed seven forged checks on Oct. 27, police said. He returned to the same bank Sunday to cash $3,500 in allegedly fake checks. Police said a teller recognized him and called authorities.

Police originally described the suspect as a woman, but arrest records indicate the suspect is a man.

He remained in custody yesterday on 14 counts of forgery and two counts of theft.

Driver dies after plunge off road

A 47-year-old Paauilo woman died Sunday after she was thrown from her pickup truck off a private ranch road on the Big Island’s north coast.

Police identified the victim as Debra A. Alani.

She was driving a 2008 Ford pickup truck north on Kukaiau Ranch Road when she lost control and ran off the road and down a 30-foot embankment and overturned, police said. She was not wearing a seat belt.

The accident occurred 3.6 miles south of Hawaii Belt Road at 11:29 a.m., police said.

Alani was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 6:30 p.m.

It was unknown whether speed, alcohol or drugs were involved. An autopsy will be done to determine the exact cause of death.

Lost hiker rescued from Mauna Kea

Hawaii County firefighters rescued a 43-year-old hiker high on the slopes of Mauna Kea late Sunday.

Firefighters said the man was hiking alone on Mauna Kea Access Road above the Hale Pohaku visitor center when darkness fell Sunday night.

The man called firefighters and reported he was lost and unable to make it down the trail.

Rescue crews used his cell phone to determine his location, just off the road at an elevation of 9,000 feet. Rescuers reached him about two miles away from Hale Pohaku.

Big Isle quake centered in Hamakua

A 3.2-magnitude earthquake shook the north side of the Big Island yesterday, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

The epicenter was in Hamakua, about 30 miles from Hilo, at a depth of 15 miles, the agency said.
