For those who thought the University of Hawaii football team should have been ranked among the nation’s best these past few weeks, think again.

The Warriors certainly don’t belong in the same neighborhood as No. 2-ranked Boise State as the Broncos fashioned a 42-7 win over the Warriors today before a packed house at Bronco Stadium.

The loss snapped a six-game winning streak for UH head coach Greg McMackin’s Warriors as they dropped to 7-3 overall and 5-1 in the Western Athletic Conference. Boise State is now 8-0 overall and 4-0 in league play.

Boise State quarterback Kellen Moore completed 30 of 37 passes for 507 yards and three touchdowns as the Broncos set a school reccord with 737 yards of total offense. Broncos running back Jeremy Avery rushed for three touchdowns as well as the offense lived up to its billing.

So did the defense that harassed UH quarterback Bryant Moniz all afternoon. He was sacked seven times, hitting only 17 of 28 passes for 127 yards and no touchdowns. UH running back Alex Green was the only offensive threat for the Warriors. He rushed for 107 yards and one score, but it wasn’t nearly enough in this lopsided affair.

Both teams struggled early offensively until the Broncos put together a nice eight-play, 76-yard scoring drive that ended on a 14-yard touchdown run by Avery out of the wildcat formation. The try for 2 failed.

After forcing a three and out, Boise State carved up the overmatched Hawaii defense once again, going 84 yards on 14 plays. Moore’s 12-yard touchdown pass to Troy Shoemaker was his 16th straight completion as the Broncos made it 13-0 with 14:12 remaining in the second quarter.

The Hawaii offense remained ineffective, but that wasn’t a problem for the Broncos, who marched methodically down the field again, going 90 yards on 10 plays as Avery scored from 4 yards out to make it 21-0 with 9:26 left in the second as the Broncos were successful on the try for 2.

The Warriors offense was stymied once more by a talented Boise State defense that held Moniz in check throughout the first half. Hawaii finally got the football on the other side of the 50, but failed to convert a fourth-down play at the Boise State 34.

The Hawaii defense got the ball right back after Moore missed Shoemaker on a post route as UH safety Mana Silva got his sixth interception of the season. But the Boise State defense forced another three and out to erase the mistake.

Moniz completed only 12 of 19 passes for 74 yards in the first half. His counterpart completed 19 straight passes at one point en route to hitting 26 of 32 for 322 yards and one touchdown in the opening 30 minutes. Moore is trying to break former UH quarterback Colt Brennan’s NCAA pass-efficiency rating record set in 2007.

It was more of the same in the second half as Boise State took the opening drive of the third quarter 60 yards for a touchdown. The last play was a 43-yard strike from Moore to a wide open Austin Pettis to put the game out of reach at 28-0 with 12:14 left in the third quarter.

The Broncos defense lived up to its billing, giving the football right back to the offense. Moore promptly hoisted an 83-yard touchdown pass to a wide open Titus Young as the Broncos continue to pile on the points. Kyle Brotzman added his third PAT to make it 35-0 with 8:47 left in the third.

Avery added his third rushing touchdown of the game, this time from 19 yards out to put the Broncos firmly in command at 42-0 with 14:46 left in the game.

Hawaii finally got on the board thanks to a 54-yard touchdown run by Green on a draw play. Scott Enos added the PAT to make it 42-7 with 13:16 left in the fourth.
