Hawaii pulled away from a pesky Cal State Fullerton team in the final minutes in an 84-70 victory in the Outrigger Hotels Rainbow Classic tonight at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Hawaii forward Bill Amis scored a career-high 24 points on 10-for-13 shooting to lead four Rainbow Warriors in double figures.
Freshman guard Bo Barnes added 19, going 5-for-9 from 3-point range, and junior guard Zane Johnson finished with 13 points for Hawaii (2-0).

Senior point guard Hiram Thompson contributed 18 points, nine coming in a decisive 14-0 Hawaii run in the final 3:12 after Cal State Fullerton tied the game with 3:39 left. Thompson also finished with seven assists with just one turnover.

Hawaii hit 10 of 24 3-point attempts and shot 63.6 percent from the field in the second half. The Rainbows finished at 52 percent for the game, played before a crowd of 4,609 (6,239 tickets issued).

Cal State Fullerton forward Orane Chin led the Titans (0-2), who lost to Central Michigan on a 3-pointer a the buzzer on Friday, with a game-high 27 points.
Hawaii got off to a ragged start and committed five turnovers in the game’s first 4 minutes. The Rainbows gave the ball away just two more times the rest of the half and took a 41-35 lead into the break.
Chin carried the Titans early on with 11 points less than 9 minutes into the game. His putback gave the visitors a 20-14 lead.
Amis then sparked a 15-3 Hawaii run with a layup in the post while being fouled. His steal then led to a Barnes 3-pointer and Anthony Salter completed the run with a jumper from the top of the key to give UH a 29-23 lead.
But the Titans responded with back-to-back 3 pointers by Steve Jurich and Isiah Umipig to tie the game.  UH edged away again and Barnes’ third 3-pointer of the half gave UH a 41-33 lead just before halftime.
CSF rallied to tie the game at 50 early in the second half on Perry Webster’s 3-pointer.
Amis broke a 54-54 tie with a short jumper to send the Rainbows on an 8-0 run. CSF again battled back and tied the game at 70 on two free throws by Sedric Martin with 3:39 left.
UH regained the lead on two free throws by Thompson and Johnson drained a 3-pointer from the right side to give UH a 75-70 lead with 2:35 left. Thompson hit another from long range with the shot clock winding down to push the lead to eight at the 1:29 mark.
The Rainbow Classic concludes Monday with Hawaii facing Central Michigan at 11 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN.
