3-month drug investigation yields 15 arrests in McCully

After a three-month drug investigation in McCully, police this week arrested 15 people on drug charges.

Narcotics/vice and East Honolulu officers conducted the investigation after receiving numerous complaints about illegal activity from the community, police said.

Officers focused on drug dealing near Stadium Park, McCully Library, Ala Wai Promenade and Ala Wai Community Park between August and October, said police Maj. Evan Ching in a statement.

Fifteen of the suspects were arrested on drug charges; 13 of them posted bail yesterday. Eight of the 15 are convicted felons.

Five others were arrested in the area on unrelated warrants.

The 15 taken in on drug warrants are: Patrick Soalo, Allyson Urusua, Reynold Oto, Peter Amerino, Keahi Acasia, Abigail Evangelista, Darryl Yagi, Makanamaikalani Kalima, Harry Mau, Georgette Preston, Mago Keleise, Rudy Vinigas, Patrick Amerino, Shari Nagasawa and Joann Speakes.

Five others arrested on unrelated warrants are: Gayle Yee, Joe Taglies, Tracy Kapahu, Alton Cayetano and Sara Saldebar.

Ching said police are still looking for five suspects in connection with the drug investigation.

"The HPD believes that these arrests will help the community to enjoy their parks and feel safe," he said.

Ron Lockwood, chairman of the McCully/Moiliili Neighborhood Board, said he’s been getting about 300 complaints a week about the drug activity, especially around the McCully Library.

Earlier this month, 400 people signed a petition in two hours to do something about the homeless around the library, he said. The sidewalk dwellers have been offering students drugs, frightening mothers from bringing their children to the library and making the sidewalks difficult to traverse with their tents, he said.

The first fifteen were charged through the drug investigation.
