Win or lose, there’s always lessons to be learned.

Hawaii came away from yesterday’s 83-67 loss to Eastern Michigan with two valuable ones:

» Twenty-three turnovers is not going to win many games.

» Senior guard Megan Tinnin is getting her 3-point shot back.

Tinnin hit all five of Hawaii’s 3-pointers en route to 17 points as UH dropped to 1-1 in the season-opening Jack in the Box Rainbow Wahine Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center. The Wahine finish out the round-robin tournament against Oregon State (2-0) today at 5 p.m.

The Beavers, with former UH guard Mark Campbell on staff, topped Cal State Northridge 49-32 in yesterday’s second game. The Matadors (0-3) face the Eagles (2-2) at 3 p.m.

Tinnin, who redshirted last year for family reasons, is eight away from passing Nani Cockett as the program’s career leader in 3-pointers. She tied her career high yesterday, giving her 121.

"I’ve been working really hard to get my shot back," said Tinnin, who set the single-season UH record as a junior with 55. "It’s a matter of confidence and changing my mind-set. There’s been some nerves the last couple of games.

"We did have some turnovers, and we need to stay focused. We can’t dwell on tonight but need to learn from it and move forward, stay together, in order to win. We will fix things."

Second-year Wahine coach Dana Takahara-Dias has seen progress in the young season.

"We had some really great play at times from individuals, but we’re trying to work on team chemistry," she said. "Eastern Michigan had a great game plan, and we knew they’d come back hard after only scoring 44 and losing to Oregon State (on Friday).

"They trapped us, made some steals early, and it became a question of confidence. We did make some adjustments after halftime. They only outscored us 39-36 in the second half, but the hole we dug in the first was a little too big for us to overcome."

Junior forward Breanna Arbuckle turned in her third career double-double (16 points, 10 rebounds) with three blocked shots for the Wahine.

Senior guard Sydney Huntley led the Eagles with 23 points, hitting seven of 11 field goals, and coming up with five of the team’s 18 steals. Junior guard Tavelyn James added 21 points, including nine of EMU’s first 11.

"We really saw the weaknesses of our game," Takahara-Dias said. "But that’s why we scheduled 14 teams that saw the postseason last year. They (EMU) were one of them.

"I would have loved a win, but we can learn from this loss."

The Wahine stayed with the Eagles for the opening 8 minutes, with Arbuckle scoring five consecutive points to give Hawaii what would be its last lead at 15-13 with 12:12 left in the half. EMU responded with a 9-0 run over the next 4 minutes, helped by three UH turnovers, to lead 23-15.

Baskets by freshman wing Shawna-Lei Kuehu and Tinnin cut the margin to four with 8 minutes left before half, but the Wahine got no closer. The Eagles finished the period on a 25-8 run, including a 12-for-16 performance from the line, for a 44-31 margin at intermission.

The gap was 20 (56-36) when the Wahine made things interesting. Senior guard Mai Ayabe came off the bench for two quick buckets to cap a 12-4 spurt that cut it 60-48.

The turnover bug returned to bite Hawaii, and EMU capitalized. James scored two of the Eagles’ next three baskets on fast breaks off steals, and the Wahine never got closer than 15 the rest of the way.

Oregon State 49, Cal State Northridge 32

Freshman Alexis Bostick scored 10 points, and Angela Misa and El Sara Greer each had 11 rebounds to lead the unbeaten Beavers.

Senior forward Analee Viena-Lota (Kamehameha ’07) led the winless Matadors with 11 points and a career-high 16 rebounds.

Sophomore forward Vi Alama (Kalani ’09) added eight points and nine rebounds.
