Crash on H-1 kills motorcyclist

A motorcyclist died last night when he crashed on the H-1 freeway near Makakilo.

The crash occurred just before 8 p.m. The operator of the motorcycle was taken in critical condition to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to Emergency Medical Services spokesman Bryan Cheplic.

Police closed the westbound lanes of the freeway near the Makakilo offramp and were advising westbound motorists to get off at Makakilo, go through Kapolei, then re-enter the freeway at the Campbell onramp.

2 busted at military gate are vendors

The Army cited two T-Mobile subcontractors for trespassing on federal property after they were arrested Saturday at the gate to Aliamanu Military Reservation, a spokesman said.

Dennis Drake, a spokesman for U.S. Army Garrison Hawaii, said the two men were taken into custody, questioned and released. He said they tried earlier to access Fort Shafter, Shafter Flats and Tripler Army Medical Center, which drew the attention of sentries.

"T-Mobile hired a vendor to help with the fine tuning of our 4G network," the company said in a statement. "We requested that our vendor not enter any military bases. We are discussing this with our vendor, and we apologize for any concern this may have caused."

Bomb disposal specialists examined the men’s van Saturday after it was deemed suspicious. Drake had no information on what was found.

He said the case is still under investigation.

Chase leader is caught and charged

A 60-year-old man allegedly driving a stolen vehicle led a police officer on a high-speed chase through Honolulu early yesterday morning before he was arrested on suspicion of reckless driving, driving without a license and driving a stolen vehicle, police said.

A patrol officer saw the vehicle being driven without headlights at about 4 a.m. yesterday and was trying to get behind it when the driver took off "at a high rate of speed," police said.

When the vehicle stopped, both the driver and a passenger fled. The officer arrested the driver.

Woman killed in crosswalk is ID’d

The Kalihi woman who was killed crossing Likelike Highway was identified yesterday by the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office as Monica Corrales, 79.

Corrales was struck by a Toyota 4Runner while in a crosswalk near Kalihi Street at about 5:25 a.m. Saturday. The driver, a 28-year-old Kalihi man, was not injured and agreed to a blood test.

Big Island house burns as lava ignites

Lava from Kilauea Volcano’s 2007 Thanksgiving Eve Breakout vent reached another Kalapana Gardens home Saturday evening, sparking a fire that engulfed the structure.

The flow had been moving slowly toward the home since Friday, coming within three feet by midafternoon Saturday. By 5:30 the house was ablaze.

Big Island fire officials said no other structures in the subdivision are currently threatened.

Lava from the vent continues to flow through tubes down to the Puhi-o-Kalaikini ocean entry southwest of Kalapana Gardens, with several breakouts on the coastal plain and cliffs west-northwest of the subdivision.

Hawaii County Civil Defense closed the public lava viewing area Saturday due to volcanic hazards.
