Impressive start has Konawaena hoops No. 1

Konawaena, unbeaten after seven nonconference games, is a near-unanimous selection by coaches and media at No. 1 in the first Star-Advertiser Girls Basketball Top 10 of the season.

The Wildcats were idle last week, but showed their might with four wins over ranked teams in a three-day span in the Konawaena Winter Classic on Nov. 18-20.

Punahou (6-1) is No. 2 after a league-opening win at Mid-Pacific on Saturday. Defending state champion Lahainaluna is at No. 3 despite a 2-4 start. The Lady Lunas have been without returning player of the year Maiki Viela, who is recovering from a back injury.

"Everyone’s playing out of position," coach Todd Rickard said. "Once we get Maiki back, she’ll relieve a lot of pressure."

Rickard’s team lost to Konawaena on Nov. 18.

"There’s no doubt about it. Kona is standing up there by themselves," he said. "They know what they want."
