UNLV got bowled over by its rugged schedule

The calendar shows that, at 92 days, this is the longest regular season in Nevada-Las Vegas football history.

The Rebels’ record — 2-10 — makes it feel as if the season is even longer.

UNLV officials had hoped for improvement after hiring Bobby Hauk, who was 80-17 in seven seasons at Montana. Three times he led the Grizzlies to the championship game of the NCAA Division I-AA tournament.

But the Rebels have endured a difficult transition period and an even tougher schedule. Nine of the Rebels’ 13 opponents are bowl eligible, and eight have been ranked in one of the two major polls.

How has this season gone?

The Rebels’ No. 1 quarterback out of training camp, Mike Clausen, is now a backup safety.

The starting center, John Gianninoto, moved from guard after Andrew Mack needed surgery to remove his appendix.

But there is hope for the Rebels. They have played 23 freshmen this season, including 14 who are 2010 high school graduates.

Freshman running back Tim Cornett is the Rebels’ leading rusher (510 yards), and Marcus Sullivan, who grayshirted last year, is one of the nation’s best kick returners.
