Hirono and Djou agree on support for Dream Act

Hawaii’s two members of the U.S. House have voted to support legislation that would carve out a path to legal status for foreign-born youngsters brought to this country illegally.

Reps. Mazie Hirono, a Democrat, and Charles Djou, a Republican, supported the bill on a House floor vote on Wednesday. Djou was one of only eight GOP members to back it.

The measure now faces an uncertain future in the Senate.

In a statement, Hirono says she has heard numerous stories in Hawaii about young adults who came to the islands as children and are now facing the nightmare of deportation.

She says the bill would give those undocumented young adults who work hard and meet the strict requirements the chance to become legal residents.
