Lihue pedestrian struck on Kuhio Highway

A 20-year-old Lihue woman was struck by a motorist while crossing Kuhio Highway this morning.

At approximately 7 a.m., police said the pedestrian was walking from the Lihue Annex toward McDonald’s in an unmarked crosswalk. The motorist, a 49-year-old woman from Eleele, was traveling northbound on the highway in a Toyota sports utility vehicle when she struck the pedestrian.

Police said the pedestrian sustained multiple injuries and was admitted to Wilcox Memorial Hospital. Her condition is not known.

Heavy rainfall and traffic and poor lighting appear to be contributing factors. Police are continuing their investigation.
