There’s nothing to get misty about this time of year. Kamehameha captured its sixth consecutive girls volleyball championship, and coaches and media voted five Warriors to the Star-Advertiser All-State Fab 15.

Leading the way is 6-foot-1 junior Misty Ma’a, who outpointed versatile Elizabeth Blake of Kahuku and Punahou setter Ali Santi for player of the year honors.

Joining Ma’a on the Fab 15 are teammates Alohi Robins-Hardy, middle Talia Jardin-Fermentez, defensive specialist/libero Chelsey Keoho and middle Nicole Sniffen.

Ma’a, used often as an opposite, was flexible in many ways. Her ability to hit from the left side and challenge Punahou’s top hitters in the state final were key to the title run. She had a team-high nine kills and added two blocks in the final, and was voted the state tourney’s most outstanding player.

"It was mostly about matchups. We switched (in the final) because their rotation switched, too," Ma’a said.

The Warriors had some new starters this season, making coach Chris Blake’s task another challenge. Ma’a, with seniors like Jardin-Fermentez and Keoho, kept the standard.

"I think this year, something I had to work on was the leadership role. I was so used to being the younger one on the team," she said. "I had to step up and help out my new teammates."

The Warriors were 17-0 at one point, but fell to nemesis Punahou in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu playoffs twice. Kamehameha kept moving forward.

"It’s working every day, every time, letting everyone know what the expectation is, our work ethic and communicating that," Ma’a said.

Molokai coach Matthew Helm was voted coach of the year. His team went 12-0 to sweep through the Maui Interscholastic League and the Division II state tournament for its first state crown.

Helm’s push for bigger challenges led to a late-season trip to Oahu, where the Farmers scrimmaged against the state’s top two D-I programs, Punahou and Kamehameha. They swept University High in three sets in the D-II state final.

Blake, Chris Leonard (Waiakea), Peter Baldwin (Punahou), Kaniela Kalama (Kahuku), Walt Quitan (UHS) and Kyle Kaaa (KS-Hawaii) were also in the running for the honor.
