Man charged in fatal Kauai shooting

One of two suspects was charged yesterday in connection with the fatal shooting of a 34-year-old man last week in Anahola, Kauai.

Vicente "Vinnie" Hilario of Anahola was charged with first-degree murder involving the death of Aureo Arick Moore of Kapaa.

Hilario was being held at the Kauai Community Correctional Center in lieu of $100,000 bail.

Police did not release the identity of the second suspect. An investigation of the shooting is ongoing.

Drowning victim was Kaneohe man

The 26-year-old man who apparently drowned at Kipu Falls in Kauai was identified yesterday as Kualana Kauhi-Apao of Kaneohe.

Kauhi-Apao attempted Friday to swim back to the edge of the pond after diving off the falls when he encountered difficulty, officials said. He went underwater and failed to surface, according to Kauai County Fire Chief Robert Westerman.

Two firefighters entered the water and found him on the bottom.

Kauhi-Apao was taken to Wilcox Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Suspects sought in attack on 2 teens

Kauai police are looking for suspects who used a BB gun to shoot two teenage bicyclists over the weekend.

Police said the shots came Saturday from a black sport utility vehicle on Kawaihau Road next to the Kapaa Elementary School basketball court. The boys, brothers, were treated for welts at Mahelona Hospital and released.

Collision kills man, injures 2 women

A Volkswagen sedan and a Ford truck pulling a horse trailer collided Sunday on Queen Kaahumanu Highway on the Big Island, killing one person and sending two others to the hospital.

Hawaii County firefighters said the vehicles were traveling in opposite directions when they collided just after 7 p.m. near Nani Kailua Drive in Kona.

A 21-year-old man driving the Volkswagen died at the scene, firefighters said. An ambulance took the two 20-year-old women in the truck to Kona Community Hospital with minor injuries.

Firefighters said the horse owner was able to round up the horses, which had escaped from the trailer after the crash.
