All that offense comes from coaches whose specialty is defense
It is noteworthy that today’s Sheraton Hawaii Bowl showdown between two of the nation’s most prolific offenses features head coaches who were defensive coordinators.
"When you’re a defensive coordinator," Hawaii’s Greg McMackin said, "you get tired of people throwing the ball at you. You want to throw at other people."
Tulsa’s Todd Graham developed a run-and-gun offense that is supposed to emphasize the rushing game. But Graham acknowledges the entertainment aspect of the passing attack.
"When you take your son to the front yard, you don’t hand him the ball off," Graham said. "You throw it to him, right?"
