Man is charged after police chase

The Kailua man accused of leading police on a lengthy chase Thursday, including a foray into the Kailua neighborhood where the president is vacationing, has been charged with multiple crimes.

Leon Rodrigues, 39, of Punaa Street was being held in lieu of $6,350 bail. He was charged Thursday night with two counts of resisting an order to stop and reckless driving. He was also being held on five contempt-of-court warrants.

Police said they went to a Kailua house Thursday, following a tip, to serve a man wanted on five warrants. Responding officers spotted him driving his silver Nissan Titan pickup at Kainui Drive and North Kalaheo Avenue, about a block from where President Barack Obama and his family are staying.

Police officers began pursuing Rodrigues and, when he turned onto Kailuana Place — where the president’s rented vacation home is situated — they switched on their blue lights.

Rodrigues drove out of the presidential checkpoint and was eventually arrested in Waimanalo.

Female stabbing victim, 64, is ID’d

The woman stabbed to death in her Kalihi home Wednesday has been identified as Marcelina Delacruz, 64.

An autopsy determined Delacruz died of blood loss from stab wounds to her abdomen.

Benjamin Lucas, 80, of Arsenal Road was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail after being charged with second-degree murder.

Police said Lucas is Delacruz’s brother-in-law.

Police said a 46-year-old woman ran downstairs at the home and saw her father standing holding a kitchen knife over her aunt, who was lying in a pool of blood.

Lucas left the home after the stabbing but surrendered later to police.

Suspect indicted in September killing

Police have charged a 23-year-old Salt Lake man in connection with the death of a 35-year-old man in September.

Aysa Delos Santos of Ala Lilikoi Street was charged with manslaughter Wednesday in a grand jury indictment. He was arrested at his home Tuesday and was being held at the Kapolei cellblock in lieu of $100,000 bail.

The city Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Christopher Myers of Honolulu and determined the cause of death was alcohol concussion syndrome from blunt head trauma, caused by a fall following a punch. Myers also had a history of alcohol abuse and a prior concussion.

Police had said Myers and another man got into a fight in front of Club Saigon Passion III at 1420 Kapiolani Blvd. on the morning of Sept. 19. A security officer found Myers unresponsive with suspicious injuries at about 7:30 a.m. at 1440 Kapiolani Blvd.

Police arrested Delos Santos on Sept. 22 on suspicion of second-degree murder but released him the following day, pending investigation.

Maui man is charged in Ponzi plot

State prosecutors have charged a Maui businessman accused of running a Ponzi scheme with two counts of making false or misleading financial statements and two counts of prohibited securities practices.

The state attorney general’s office said Thursday that Maui Industrial Loan & Finance Co. President Lloyd Kimura filed false or misleading statements in company documents.

It also alleges he defrauded two couples of at least than $100,000.

Maui Industrial has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. Kimura has filed for personal bankruptcy.

Kimura could not immediately be reached for comment.
