Welcome the Year of the Rabbit

The Hawaii Kotohira Jinsha-Hawaii Dazaifu Tenmangu temple, at 1239 Olomea St. in Kalihi, invites the public to participate in centuries-old traditions to welcome the Year of the Rabbit.

The event will take place New Year’s Day from 12:01 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For the Japanese, "shogatsu," or New Year’s, is the most important seasonal celebration, when millions of people in Japan visit a Shinto shrine during the first three days of the new year, a tradition called Hatsumode.

Complimentary bowls of ozoni mochi soup will be served from 12:01 to 2 a.m., and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Special New Year’s "otoso" (sake infused with herbs to enhance immunity) from Japan will be served from 12:01 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Shishimai lion dance will be performed to exorcise spirits and invite good luck from 12:01 to 2 a.m. and from 10 a.m. till noon.

"Omamori" charms will be available for the home, good luck, health, prosperity, car, pets, golf, etc.
