Kyle Barone scored 15 points and Jeff Ledbetter added 14 as Idaho soundly beat host Hawaii 59-44 in the WAC season-opening men’s basketball game for UH on Thursday.

It was the lowest point total for Hawaii since 1998.

Hiram Thompson led Hawaii with nine points as a crowd of around 4,000 watched at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Idaho improved to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in the WAC. Hawaii fell to 9-6 and 0-3 with its third loss in a row.

Idaho led 34-29 at halftime as Barone scored 11 points with 5-of-5 shooting from the floor. He and Stephen Madison combined for 17 points off the bench.

The Vandals then scored the first eight points of the second half, with Shawn Henderson contributing six of his eight.

Douglas Kurtz then scored both of his baskets for UH to stop the run and make the score 44-33. But Hawaii never put together a serious rally from that point.

UH starting forward Bill Amis played for the first time after missing 10 games due to a foot injury. He scored six points with two rebounds in 29 minutes.

Zane Johnson scored seven points for Hawaii, and Vander Joaquim and Bo Barnes both added six.

Hawaii was outrebounded 40-28, and the Rainbows shot 29 percent from the floor. They made just three of 22 three-point attempts.

“They were definitely more athletic,” Hawaii coach Gib Arnold said. “Quickness and athleticism.”

UH hosts Boise State on Saturday.

“We’re not nearly where we need to be, and we know that. We’ve got to do some things,” Arnold said. “I’m not giving up on this team.”
