Oahu man charged in Big Isle stabbing

A 40-year-old Waipahu man was charged Tuesday with attempted murder in connection with the stabbing of another man on the Big Island.

Anthony Kali was charged with second-degree attempted murder, abuse of a family or household member and first-degree assault. His bail was set at $56,000.

Patrol officers responded to a call from Mountain View at 7:39 p.m. Sunday and found a 19-year-old man with stab wounds in his arm and stomach, police said.

Detectives determined that Kali and the victim were in an altercation that became violent inside a Plumeria Street home.

Police officer testifies about finding gun

A preliminary hearing for a man accused of fatally shooting another man on Kauai continued Tuesday with testimony from an officer who found the weapon allegedly used in the incident.

Acting police Capt. Sherwin Perez testified in District Court that he found the gun underwater during a search along the Anahola coastline on Dec. 20.

Vicente Hilario, 24, is accused of fatally shooting Aureo Moore, 34, near Anahola Beach Park on Dec. 17. He is charged with first- and second-degree murder and is being held at Kauai Community Correctional Center, unable to post $100,000 bail.

The first-degree murder charge stems from Moore being a witness in an Aug. 21 robbery that allegedly involved Hilario. Prosecutors said that case is still under investigation.

Perez described the gun as an unloaded silver, .25-caliber semiautomatic handgun.

Hilario’s attorney, Keith Shigetomi, said, "There’s nothing to link the firearm that he found … three days after the incident" with the shooting. Hilario’s preliminary hearing will continue on Monday and again on Jan. 21.

Man, 53, dies after being hurt at pier

A 53-year-old man with no permanent address died yesterday after sustaining unspecified injuries at the Waimea State Recreational Pier, Kauai County announced.

Police do not suspect foul play.

A visiting couple noticed the man was in need of medical assistance and notified authorities at about 10:30 a.m. The couple assisted the man until medics arrived.

Medics took the man to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. An autopsy will be conducted.
