Ala Wai Challenge moves to Waikiki

The 26th Ala Wai Challenge, a fundraiser for the Waikiki Community Center, has a new name and venue.

Renamed the Duke Kahanamoku Challenge, the Jan. 23 event will be held at Duke Kahanamoku Beach next to the Hilton Hawaiian Village. The day begins with a double-hull-canoe procession, with competition starting at 10 a.m.

Besides quarter-mile open-ocean outrigger canoe races, there will be Hawaiian makahiki games: ulu maika (sand bowling), niu relay (run with coconuts), moa pahe’e (sliding); kukini (messenger run) and huki kaula (tug-of-war). There also will be an invitational stand-up paddleboard relay, entertainment, Hawaiian crafts and food.

This year’s honorees are the Pi’ilani’a family and the late Mau Piailug, the legendary Micronesian navigator.

Complimentary parking will be available at the Hawaii Convention Center with shuttle service to the Hilton Hawaiian Village from 7 to 8:30 a.m., and return service to the convention center from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m.
