Cloudy skies hang over Aloha Tower this morning as the first of three weather systems approaches the islands. Breezy winds from the south are predicted today, followed by showers. Another cold front, expected Wednesday, is forecast to bring heavier showers.
The first of three weather systems moved over Kauai, Oahu and Maui today. The next system, expected to arrive on Wednesday, is predicted to bring heavy rain to all islands.
The cold front is blamed for a rockslide that closed the highway betwen Lahaina and the rest of Maui for a short time tonight.
The National Weather Service issued a flash flood warning for Maui and a flood adivisory for Oahu earlier in the evening and then canceled them as the system moved down the island chain.
But a flash flood watch beginning Wednesday will be in effect when a new weather system is mloves over the islands.
The cool temperatures, with lows in the 60s overnight, are forecast to continue through the week.
The sun should pop back out tomorrow for all islands except the Big Island, after the current front passes. But forecasters say it will be a temporary reprieve.
The next storm system moving in on Wednesday with the potential for flooding, said forecaster Ian Morrison.
"This one is going to linger around from Wednesday morning through just about Thursday night," he said.
Scattered showers are predicted for Friday. The weekend may clear briefly, but yet another front is headed for the islands on Sunday, Morrison said.
"It’s just an active winter, storm-wise," he said.
Forecasters also posted a small craft advisory for waters around Hawaii because of rough seas.
A high surf advisory is also posted beginning at midnight for north and west-facing shores of Maui and north shores of Niihau, Kauai, Oahu and Molokai.
Forecasters said a series of storms moving across the western and central Pacific Ocean generated the swells which are expected to be in the advisory range until about 6 p.m. tomorrow.
Waves with faces between 15 and 50 feet are predicted.
A wind advisory has also been issued for the summit of Haleakala.
