The Hawaii women’s basketball team set a new mark of futility to start a Western Athletic Conference season after a 52-41 loss at Utah State today.

UH (6-14, 0-7 WAC) lost its eighth straight game and surpassed the program’s previous worst record to open WAC play of 0-6.

The Rainbow Wahine led 21-17 at halftime but couldn’t maintain their advantage in the second half. UH shot 32.6 percent from the field and committed 20 turnovers, on which the Aggies (9-10, 3-3) scored 24 points.

UH starting forwards Kamilah Jackson and Breanna Arbuckle missed the game because of a one-game suspension for a violation of team rules, a team official said. Jackson is the team’s leading scorer and is tied for the national lead in rebounding average at 13.1 boards per game.

By losing at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum in Logan, Utah, Hawaii dropped its 17th straight WAC road game going back to 2008-09.

The WAC set up a stretch of five straight road games for the Wahine, more than any other WAC team. By the last of the five, the schedule seemed to take its toll.

Senior point guard Keisha Kanekoa led UH with 15 points, but shot 6-for-15 and committed six turnovers.

Reserve forward Julita Bungaite moved into the starting lineup and matched her career high with 12 rebounds.

Forward Ashlee Brown led USU with 21 points and 14 rebounds.

UH next hosts Nevada (13-5, 2-3) on Monday.
