Landfill meeting set

The City Council committees on Public Works and Sustainability and on Zoning will hold a special meeting at 9 a.m. tomorrow in the Council Committee Room at Honolulu Hale to discuss the newly appointed Landfill Site Selection Committee; preliminarily identified landfill sites; and the capacity of the current Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill.

Bulky items picked up in some areas

City crews began picking up bulky items yesterday in certain parts of Honolulu, including Waikiki, and will continue at a limited pace throughout the weekend, the city said.

However, the city is asking the public to not leave bulky items curbside until the landfill and refuse collection system get up to full speed.

The landfill has not fully reopened and is mainly taking critical waste items such as HPOWER residue, wastewater sludge and debris. Bulky waste is being mixed in with the wastewater sludge.

City officials stopped the pickup of bulky items during repairs to the landfill, which was damaged more than two weeks ago by heavy rainfall.
