‘Iolani holds down AOP to close regular season

Top-ranked ‘Iolani held it’s second top-five team this week to fewer than 30 points.

It proved to be just barely enough.

Micah Dunhour missed a pull-up 3-pointer as time expired, allowing the Raiders to hold on for a 32-29 victory over No. 5 Academy of the Pacific last night to win the Interscholastic League of Honolulu regular-season title.

‘Iolani almost let a 10-point fourth-quarter lead get away as AOP closed the game on an 8-1 run. A missed free throw by Reid Saito with 29 seconds gave the Dolphins a chance to send the game into overtime.

With 8 seconds remaining, an errant inbounds pass eventually found its way into the hands of Dunhour, who dribbled down the left side and pulled up for a game-tying 3-pointer with a second left that was just long.

"It was kind of same as the first game," ‘Iolani coach Dean Shimamoto said. "Our guys got tentative, their defensive pressure pumped up and our guys got caught in that dilemma of whether or not to attack or hold it and run off time."

The Raiders (13-1), who clinched a state tournament berth on Thursday with a win over Saint Louis, assured themselves of a first-round bye as the overall league champion.

"It’s nice that we get some time to rest and prepare for the state tournament," Shimamoto said. "The alternative was playing Kamehameha, which looks really, really good right now, and I think we’re going to need that time to prep."

Kamehameha has also secured a berth in states, leaving the Dolphins (9-5) and No. 4 Punahou as the favorites to play for the final spot in the ILH third-place tournament beginning Tuesday.

"Our goal from the beginning of the season was to make the state tournament," AOP coach Wally Marciel said. "We’re two wins away from getting that goal."

The Dolphins closed the first half on an 11-2 run to take a 20-14 lead into halftime. Moritz Krume drilled a 3-pointer and scored five of his game-high 11 points in the second quarter as AOP held ‘Iolani to 1-for-10 shooting in the period.

"We weren’t worried. A lot of games we’ve been in that situation of being down at the half," ‘Iolani senior Trevyn Tulonghari said. "Last year we had to play Kamehameha for the ILH championship (in a tiebreaker) and fortunately we don’t have to do that again this year."

‘Iolani turned up the defense in the second half, keeping AOP without a field goal until the 3:31 mark of the fourth quarter. Tulonghari’s bucket with a little more than a minute in the third left gave ‘Iolani its first lead since the first quarter, and Adam Ching drilled a 3-pointer as time expired to give the Raiders a 26-21 advantage going into the final quarter.

"That third quarter, we scored only one point and Ching hits that big shot at the end of the third quarter to put us down five instead of two," Marciel said. "We had to press them and do some trapping to try to make something happen."

AOP turned back-to-back ‘Iolani turnovers into buckets to pull within five. Gabriel Vega missed the front end of a one-in-one and Drew Vienna hit a pull-up jumper on the baseline to make it 32-29. AOP fouled Saito, who missed a free throw, setting up Dunhour’s miss to end the game.

Dunhour finished with seven points, five rebounds and three assists. Ching’s two 3-pointers made him ‘Iolani’s leading scorer with six. ‘Iolani shot 36 percent (13-for-36) from the field and 50 percent (6-for-12) at the free-throw line.
