Big Island man charged in stabbing of another man

Big Island police said today that they have charged a 42-year-old Mountain View man for allegedly stabbing a 43-year-old Volcano man.

Police charged Darren I. Hopfe with first-degree assault. His bail was set at $25,000.

Police officers responded at 12:04 a.m. Sunday of a man who was stabbed by someone in the area of Old Volcano Road and Nahelenani Street in the Volcano area.

Officers found the 43-year-old man with cuts to his hands and abdomen received during the attack, and was taken in the Hilo Medical Center in serious condition.

Police said the Volcano man underwent surgery, and his condition has been upgraded to stable.

Hopfe was scheduled to appear in court this afternoon.
