Mililani crash injures 6

Six people were injured yesterday in a four-vehicle crash on Kamehameha Highway a mile south of Lanikuhana Avenue near Kipapa Bridge.

The 1:35 p.m. crash closed Kamehameha Highway in Mililani for four hours.

A Waianae man, 31, who had been pinned under a flatbed pickup, was taken to the Queen’s Medical Center in critical condition, according to a spokeswoman for the city Department of Emergency Services.

The truck was southbound on Kamehameha and drifted into the northbound lanes, colliding with another pickup truck, police said. The occupants, two men, ages 28 and 21, suffered serious injuries and were also taken to Queen’s, police said.

The truck sideswiped a car containing two females who were treated at the scene.

The rubble from the flatbed struck a motorcycle. The 28-year-old male motorcyclist was able to separate himself from the bike before it was buried under the rubble, officials said. He was in good condition.

All occupants were wearing seat belts and the motorcyclist had a helmet on, police said. 

Man dies after zip-line tour

A 64-year-old Indiana man died after collapsing after a zip-line tour Tuesday on Kauai’s north shore.

Darwin Gilbert complained of fatigue during the morning tour, a Kauai County spokeswoman said.

He rested for a few minutes then told guides that he was ready to continue. But after completing the zip line, Gilbert fell to one knee and collapsed.

Rescuers were notified at 12:22 p.m. Firefighters attempted to revive Gilbert, but he died at the scene. No foul play is suspected. 

Air bag had role in death of toddler

LIHUE » Police say an air bag played a role in the death of a 14-month-old toddler killed in a Kauai car accident over the weekend.

Michael Pagelsdorf Jr. was holding his daughter Kaylie in his lap when the Nissan Pathfinder he was driving crashed into a PT Cruiser stopped in traffic ahead of it on Kaumualii Highway on Sunday.

Kauai Police Lt. Mark Scribner told The Garden Island newspaper the police won’t know the specifics until they are done with their full investigation. But he says an air bag crushed Kaylie and that the toddler wouldn’t have been harmed had she been in a child safety seat.

Police estimate Pagelsdorf was traveling 25 mph at the time of the accident. The Pathfinder was only moderately damaged in the crash.

Bomb threat again closes Kauai High

LIHUE » For the second time in a week, authorities evacuated Kauai High School because of bomb threats contained in graffiti painted on classroom buildings.

School officials called police after the graffiti was discovered at 6:05 a.m. yesterday, said William Arakaki, Kauai complex superintendent.

The school was closed for the day, and police remained on campus until 2 p.m.

No explosives were found.

Last Thursday, officials discovered threatening graffiti on campus hinting that a bomb would go off. No bombs or explosives were found.
