Krystal Pascua gave the ‘Iolani girls soccer team something it normally lacks: a physical presence.

The senior forward, who also provided scoring punch and leadership for the Raiders, was named the Star-Advertiser’s state girls soccer player of the year after a recent vote of coaches and media.

"She’s a very talented player," said ‘Iolani coach Kristin Masunaga. "She gave us a physical presence. Typical ‘Iolani girls are timid, finesse players. Krystal gave us a physical presence and ability to score. She was strong on the ball and not afraid to go through anything."

Pascua was one of four players from state Division I runner-up ‘Iolani named to the first team. State D-I champion Punahou had three on the first team and three more on the second team.

‘Iolani midfielders Twyla Hamasaki and Hana Tomozawa and defender Taylor Kipilii also were selected to the first team.

"At the same time, (Pascua) had a great supporting cast, which allowed her to play to the best of her ability."

Pascua scored 11 goals during the Interscholastic League of Honolulu season, and added four more during Iolani’s four state tournament matches.

Pascua, who signed with the University of Hawaii, was one of two seniors on the Raiders roster.

"She’s a captain. Her work ethic definitely rubbed off on the other players," Masunaga said. "The girls respect her and look up to her."

Punahou, which won its third consecutive state title, placed midfielder Dempsey Banks, defender Kylie Chun and goalkeeper Anu Kahele-Manners on the first team.

The Buffanblu outscored their opponents 59-7 for the season.

Kahele-Manners, a sophomore, made a nice recovery from a broken wrist. She missed the entire preseason and first two ILH matches.

"She’s got unlimited potential. She is physically strong and extremely agile, especially for her size," said Punahou coach Matt Martinson.

Mililani, the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Conference champion, placed forward T.J. Reyno, who scored 16 goals, and defender Kristen Fujinaga on the first team.

Moanalua’s high-scoring duo of forward Tiana Fujimoto and midfielder Storm Kenui made the first team. Fujimoto scored a state-high 23 goals, while Kenui tallied 18 for Moanalua, the OIA Red runner-up.

Rounding out the first team is Kamehameha forward Caprice Dydasco, who scored 15 goals during the ILH season.

Punahou’s Martinson was named coach of the year.

"A lot of games we didn’t play our best, but every day we came back to practice and talked about it. We talked about getting better," Martinson said. "The girls were good at assessing themselves and fortunately it came together."
