Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill will be closed to all haulers until at least Thursday while repairs are made.

The Waimanalo Gulch Sanitary Landfill in Nanakuli has reached its limit and will be closed tomorrow, the city announced.

The city’s H-POWER waste-to-energy plant is down for maintenance and the landfill has not yet gotten permission to reopen areas of the landfill damaged by storms in January, said Markus Owens, spokesman for the city Department of Environmental Services.

The H-POWER facility burns waste to ash to produce electricity and reduces the amount of material going into the landfill.

Also closed tomorrow are the transfer stations at Keehi and Kawailoa, and all convenience centers. Only the Kapaa Transfer Station will be open tomorrow, the city said.

Owens said the landfill is expected to reopen on Monday.

He said repairs to the damaged portions of the landfill are expected to be completed by Monday and approvals from  the federal Environmental Protection Agency and the state Department of Health are also expected that day.
