Kauai man arrested after crashing truck into Waipa Bridge

A 32-year-old Hanalei man was arrested Sunday night after crashing his vehicle into the Waipa Bridge.

According to police, the man was heading east on Kuhio Highway when his Toyota Tacoma crossed the center line and struck the west end of Waipa Bridge.

Police were called to the scene at 8:24 p.m. and arrested the man for operating a vehicle under the influence of an intoxicant. He was later released on bail.

The passenger, a 30-year-old male from Hanalei, was riding in the bed of the truck at the time of the collision and sustained a laceration to his head. Medics transported the man to Wilcox Hospital for further medical treatment. His current condition was unknown.

The bridge was closed for about one-and-a-half hours as crews worked to clear the vehicle from the roadway.
