Patton, Waracka honored

Hawaii Pacific’s Breanne Patton was named the PacWest softball player of the week and Hawaii-Hilo’s Amber Waracka the pitcher of the week yesterday.

Patton, a junior out of Campbell, earned MVP honors in the Tournament of Champions for both her pitching and hitting success during the three-day event in Turlock, Calif. She went 3-1 on the mound in getting the No. 22 Sea Warriors into Sunday’s championship game against Chico State. Playing first base in the title game against the Wildcats, Patton scored twice as HPU won the tournament for the second time in three years, 5-2. For the week, Patton scored 10 runs, and had two doubles, one triple, a homer and six RBIs.

Also named to the all-tournament team were HPU sophomore shortstop Celina Garces and Hawaii-Hilo senior outfielder Tessa Truong. The Vulcans won the bronze bracket to finish seventh overall out of 22 teams.

Waracka, a junior out of Kamehameha, went 6-1 last week, including winning both ends of the conference doubleheader against Notre Dame de Namur. She had a 1.94 ERA in nine appearances, with five complete games in seven starts and two shutouts. She struck out 33 batters in 47 innings.

Lee struck out 10 in nine innings against the Urban Knights, but didn’t pick up the win in the 2-1 victory that went 11 innings.

Mariano, a Mililani High product, was 2-0 last week, including the victory in relief of Lee. He also picked up a save and posted a 0.00 ERA over four innings, allowing no hits.
