Flowers have been placed near the corner of Koa and Kaiulani avenues in Waikiki where a 21-year-old man died Monday night when he was run over by a tour bus as he was fleeing after allegedly stealing two 12-packs of beer from the ABC store at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki.

A man who was running after stealing two 12-packs of beer from a Waikiki convenience store was killed Monday night when he fell and was run over by a tour bus, police said.

The man was killed a few hours after police released him following his arrest for theft in a separate incident that day, police said.

The 21-year-old man, with no local address, was running away after stealing the beer from the ABC store at the Hyatt Regency Waikiki hotel when he tripped and fell, police said. The man dropped the beer on Koa Street and kept running but tripped again.

Police said a yellow MCItour bus, owned by Travel Plaza Transportation, had just made a legal right turn. The man fell under the rear wheel of the bus and was dragged 100 feet, police said.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. His name was not immediately released.

It was the second time in recent years a would-be beer thief died under unusual circumstances while running from the ABC Hyatt.

On July 6, 2009, 33-year-old Humberto Murillo of San Fernando, Calif., died after a struggle with a store manager and a tourist who came to the manager’s aid.

Police said Murillo had grabbed two 12-packs of beer without paying and was being chased by a store manager at about 9 p.m. that night. Murillo began assaulting the manager, 29, who then called for help, police said. After he was subdued by the tourist, Murillo continued to struggle. When the tourist said he would let Murillo go if he stopped resisting, Murillo said he would kill the tourist if he got free, police said.

Murillo was unconscious by the time hotel security arrived.
