Legislators say school day compromise is near
Lawmakers say they’re close to reaching a compromise on implementing a law that lengthens the school day.
A conference committee is scheduled for Wednesday, during which a draft bill is expected to be discussed.
Legislators are looking at a variety of options for amending Act 167, which sets minimums for the length of the school day.
The Department of Education says implementing the law could cost millions, and teachers fear it could result in the loss of some of their planning or preparation time.
Lawmakers say they are looking to provide exemptions for schools that are far away from reaching the minimums, but don’t want a complete pushback of the law.
