Delicious dumplings

I love potstickers, those little half-moon dumplings. They remind me of family gatherings where everyone had a part in making them. My job was to roll out the skins, since I didn’t have the manual dexterity to pinch those little pleats perfectly. But who has the time to make them these days? Safeway does, apparently, with its Select brand. The chicken, pork and vegetable filling is lightly seasoned and tasty whether dipped in sauce or eaten plain. The skins are excellent: not too thick, not too thin, and tough enough to hold together whether boiled or pan-fried. They’re $7 for a bag of 30 in the frozen foods section. — Steven Mark

A fish tale

On my occasional walk to work through Downtown Honolulu, I sometimes find myself at the corner of King and Alakea streets. When I do, I make it a point to look up at a piece of clever street art that invariably brightens my morning. A lone reef triggerfish (aka humuhumunukunukuapuaa) “swims” on the mauka side of the 1902 Alakea dark-stone building, oblivious to the workday car and foot traffic below. Compared with the usual array of hastily sprayed tags and eye-catching hip-hop pieces seen around the island, the triggerfish painting shows that the anonymous street artist took real care in line rendition and color. Amid an urban jungle, it reminds me that I do still live in Hawaii. — Gary Chun

Folding vases for spring blooms

I love anything that saves space. So while shopping for Easter goodies at Price Busters, I was delighted to come across these collapsible vases. The plastic containers fold flat and come in a variety of designs. Just fill with water and add flowers. The larger one, with a 13-inch base, is $1.99; an 8-inch version is $1.49. Both stand about 10 1/2 inches tall but could easily be cut down to size. My aunt has had her vase sitting on her windowsill for more than a week. She said she just keeps adding water. Once the flowers die, just wash the vase and fold to store. — Michelle Ramos
