Man, 79, identified as beating victim
The city medical examiner’s office identified the 79-year-old man who died after he was severely beaten in his Haka Drive home in Kalihi Monday night as Glenwood Ferreira.
A friend found Ferreira with severe head wounds at about 7 p.m. Ferreira was taken to a hospital where he died the next day.
Police arrested his 18-year-old grandson, David Hernandez III, who was later released in connection with the beating, pending lab results. However, Hernandez was charged Wednesday with first-degree burglary in an unrelated case. He is being held in lieu of $25,000 bail.
2 men critically hurt in dual stabbing
Police are investigating a double stabbing during a fight in Kalihi that left two men in critical condition yesterday morning.

The altercation happened near Kamehameha Shopping Center at Likelike Highway and School Street at about 2:45 a.m., an Emergency Medical Services supervisor said.
Police said a caller reported two men fighting. Officers found a man in his 20s and a man in his 30s with injuries.
Body found in Palolo Stream culvert
Police say a body found in a paved portion of Palolo Stream near Waialae Avenue yesterday might be that of a homeless man who lived in a culvert under St. Louis Drive.
Police opened an unattended-death case pending the results of an autopsy.
Security personnel at Regency Park condominiums on Waialae Avenue reported the body in the culvert at about 5:15 p.m., police said. Detective Gary Lahens said the man, who appeared to be in his 50s, apparently slipped and fell.

Man missing off Kauai ID’d as Czech
A man reported missing last week while swimming off Kauai’s north shore was identified Wednesday by Kauai County as Vladimir Horak, 63, of the Czech Republic.
Horak was swimming with friends in waters off Hanakapiai and was reported missing by a hiker just before 1 p.m. April 28.
The rescue personnel conducted sea-based and aerial searches for Horak April 28 and last Friday. The search continued until 11:45 a.m. Saturday.
Wind helps firefighters contain blaze
Maui firefighters contained a brush fire yesterday that burned an estimated 10 acres in Olowalu.
The fire was first reported at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday above a pig farm. No homes were damaged, but three families living nearby were evacuated.
Wind on Wednesday night helped spread the fire, but rain early yesterday morning helped firefighters contain the blaze at about 8:15 a.m. Crews remained at the scene to mop up and monitor the situation.
