The threat of thunderstorms has lessened, but hot, muggy weather may linger through the weekend, the National Weather Service says.

The weather system northwest of the islands that brought heavy rain over the weekend is keeping cooling tradewinds away, which means high humidity, and the possibility of vog and afternoon showers are in the forecast for the next several days.

“It’s definitely going to seem on the muggy side and that might persist through the later part of the weekend,” said Victor DeJesus, a forecaster with the weather service.

The hot, muggy weather could create afternoon showers as heat rises from interior sections of the islands. Vog could also move over the islands depending on the wind direction and emissions from Kilauea.

Forecasters lifted a flash flood watch for Kauai and Oahu overnight but they said a watch or warning could be posted again if conditions change.

“There’s still some lingering instability, so chances of heavy showers could persist today for Kauai, Oahu and the Big Island,” DeJesus said.

Light Kona winds from the east and southeast will likely be with us through the weekend and could even persist into next week until the weather system to our northwest moves further away or dissipates, DeJesus said.
