Police arrested a 27-year-old man today in connection with the death of his adoptive mother in a roominghouse in Kalihi.

The woman, 56, lived in a house with separate rental units at 1724 Eluwene St., police said. Family members identified her as Teresita Hernane.

Police said another woman who lived at the home found the victim unresponsive and bleeding about 10 a.m. when she went to check on her.

Responding officers found the victim in her bedroom with at least one laceration to her head, police said.

Officers also found a kitchen knife in the room, although it’s not known if it was used in the crime.

Police found Charlie D. Hernane, also of the Eluewene Street address, nearby at Kalakaua Gym on McNeil Street about 11:40 a.m. He is being held pending a charge of second-degree murder.
