Shooting suspect surrenders to police

A 32-year-old Kaneohe man gave himself up to police yesterday after he allegedly shot a gun over the head of another man last week.

Police said the victim reported that at about 3:30 p.m. Friday a man was parked in a vehicle in his Kailua driveway holding a gun.

When the victim, 33, confronted the man, the suspect pointed the gun above his head and fired, police said.

The suspect fled before police arrived but turned himself in at the Alapai station yesterday afternoon.

Charges of terroristic threatening and reckless endangering are pending, police said.

Security camera catches teens on tape

Police arrested two teenagers suspected of damaging surveillance cameras at a Honolulu school Sunday afternoon.

Police said a 42-year-old woman who worked at the school discovered two security cameras damaged when she went to work Monday.

The woman reviewed the cameras’ videotapes and saw the two teenagers — a boy, 13, and a girl, 16 — damaging the devices. When she confronted them, they both confessed.

Police arrested them at 2:30 p.m. Monday on suspicion of second- and third-degree criminal property damage. They were released later pending investigation.

Man arrested in meat cleaver threat

Police officers arrested a 78-year-old Makiki man who they say threatened a 75-year-old woman with a meat cleaver and a cane in separate incidents.

The woman told police the suspect woke her at 2 a.m. March 5 and accused her of stealing his property. He allegedly raised a meat cleaver and threatened to kill her if his property wasn’t returned. The woman said she feared for her life and begged him to stop, police said. The suspect complied and left the room.

On Monday, police said, the man again accused the woman of stealing from him and chased her out of an apartment with his cane about 9:15 p.m. Police were called, and the man was arrested at a Kewalo Street apartment building.

Fire razes Pahoa house, spares cars

A Big Island fire destroyed a three-bedroom house in Pahoa on Monday, causing $90,000 worth of damage.

Firefighters responding to a 7:16 p.m. alarm at 15-2677 Opae St. found the 800-square-foot structure engulfed in flames. The fire was brought under control by 7:45 p.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but firefighters believe it might have started in the kitchen.

No one was injured. Neighbors heard several small explosions, possibly caused by propane tanks. Two cars parked outside the house were not damaged.

Coast Guard aids in Kiribati search

The U.S. Coast Guard is helping search for six young people from the Pacific island nation of Kiribati who were reported missing in an outrigger canoe last week.

The Coast Guard said yesterday the six were collecting palm leaves for roofing off the west coast of Tarawa. They include two men, age 19, and four girls, ages 8, 9, 12 and 14. A turboprop plane and search and rescue team from Air Station Barbers Point in Hawaii arrived at the scene yesterday.

The group was last seen at 8 p.m. Thursday, Hawaii time. Local fishermen spotted the canoe adrift and swamped on Saturday. The Republic of Kiribati asked for help from the Coast Guard on Monday.

Kiribati is about 2,300 miles southwest of Hawaii.
