Driver allegedly tries to escape police in stolen SUV
A 47-year-old man who was caught with a stolen sport utility vehicle and then tried unsuccessfully to flee police in Pacific Palisades on Friday was being held at the Honolulu cellblock Friday night.
A Pearl City patrol officer was sent to investigate a report of a suspicious vehicle on Awikiwiki Street about 6 a.m. Friday, police said. Its rear window was broken and a knife was in the ignition.
When the suspect stepped into the 2004 Nissan Pathfinder and tried to drive away, he ignored the officer’s demands to get out of the vehicle. He drove off, but crashed into a wall, and then got stuck between the wall and a utility pole, police said.
After a brief struggle with officers, the man was arrested.
He was booked on suspicion of resisting an order to stop a motor vehicle, driving a stolen vehicle, fleeing the scene of an accident, resisting arrest, and driving without a license.
The Pathfinder was later found to have been stolen from a Waipahu used car dealership, police said.
