Honolulu’s Michelle Wie lost her third-round match 1 up to Sophie Gustafson today at the $1.5 million Sybase Match Play Championship in Gladstone, N.J.

The No. 9-seeded Wie grabbed an early lead with a par on the first hole and held her 1-up advantage through seven before Gustafson grabbed a 1-up lead at the turn with pars at Nos. 8 and 9. A birdie at the 10th for Wie made the match all square, but Gustafson birdied the 12th and never looked back as both golfers matched scores the rest of the way.

Gustafson faces No. 1 seed Na Yeon Choi in a quarterfinals meeting today. Three Americans — Cristie Kerr, Paula Creamer and Angela Stanford — advanced into the elite eight. The semifinals and finals will be held tomorrow at the Hamilton Farm Golf Club.
