An Army ordnance team flew to Kauai and destroyed a World War II-era sea marker today that had been discovered on a Kapaa beach, Kauai officials said.

Officials said the French-made, 30-by 6-inch cylinder contained a small amunt of explosives.

A 15-year-old found the object on the beach near mile marker 9 off of Kuhio Highway around 10:30 p.m. Friday night, Kauai officials said.

The teenager brought the device home to Kapaa, where it was discovered by the teenager’s parents yesterday morning on the front porch of their Hundley Heights home.

Police officers secured the scene by closing portions of Iwaena Loop and evacuated homes in the area.

Transportation Security Administration officials from Lihue Airport confirmed that the device could be dangerous, Kauai officials said. 

Two members of the Army’s 706th Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team from Schofield Barracks arrived on Kauai Saturday night and took the ordnance to a remote location in Kapaa where they unsuccessfully tried to disable it.

After additional equipment arrived on Kauai, the ordnance was destroyed at 10:58 a.m. today, Kauai officials said.

Kauai Police Capt. Michael Contrades warned people to leave similar objects alone and alert authorities.

“These objects can be dangerous and should be handled only by experts with knowledge of how to dispose of them,” he said.
