Flags to fly at half-staff on Saturday, Monday

Gov. Neil Abercrombie ordered today that the United States and State of Hawaii flags will be flown at half-staff on state buildings Saturday in memory of former state legislator and judge Hiroshi Kato, who died April 14 at age 89.

Flags will also be at half-staff on Monday in observance of Memorial Day.

Regarding Memorial Day, President Barack Obama issued this statement: “I designate the hour beginning in each locality at 11 a.m. of that day as a time to unite in prayer. I also ask all Americans to observe the National Moment of Remembrance beginning at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day.”

The United States Code authorizes state governors to order the U.S. flag to be flown at half-staff “in the event of the death of a present or former official of the government of any State, territory, or possession of the United States, or the death of a member of the Armed Forces from any State, territory, or possession who dies while serving on active duty …”
