Big Island police have identified a 22-year-old Hilo man who was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Hilo over the weekend as Theodore V. Braxton.

Braxton was from Huntingdon, Pa., and a student at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

He was majoring in performing arts and minoring in agriculture, said Jackie Johnson, chairwoman of the performing arts department at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.

He was a pianist and singer and had a passion for circus arts, Johnson said. He was one of the best performers in the program and was set to graduate next year, she said.

Braxton was hit by a van turning left in front of him on Kinoole Street on Saturday. The man driving the van didn’t stop and dragged Braxton for about a block. The van driver continued on to his Banyan Drive home, dragging Braxton’s mo-ped about a mile away.

Police arrested the driver, Keolaokalani Kailianu, 41, who was charged with first-degree negligent homicide, drunk driving, and fleeing the scene of an accident. He posted $10,500 bail and was released from Hawaii Community Correctional Center on Tuesday.
