Children’s pools closed because of drain covers
With less than a week before the start of its annual Summer Fun program, the city is hoping to reopen two district park wading pools closed because covers on the pools’ drains could be among those in a nationwide recall last month.
The city Department of Parks and Recreation closed kiddie pools at Kalihi Valley and Kaneohe District parks Tuesday as a precaution, Parks Director Gary Cabato said Thursday.
A local supplier that installed the covers is expected to notify the city Monday about whether the devices are on the recall list, Cabato said.
Defective drain covers pose a number of suction hazards, he said.
"Toes, feet and fingers can be trapped and hair can be tangled in faulty drain covers," he said. "We want no entrapment potential."
If the covers need replacement, the supplier will reinstall them at no cost to the city, Cabato said.

He hopes the issue will be resolved by Wednesday, when the city’s summer programs begin.
"We’re in waiting mode," he said.
Jordan Mineshima, a Kalihi resident, was at Kalihi Valley park Thursday. He said he regularly takes his daughter to the park and its wading pool, which is about 18 inches deep.
"If an accident were to happen (due to the drain covers), I would be shocked, angry," he said.
The recalled drain covers were made by A&A Manufacturing and Color Match Pool Fittings, companies that are listed as manufacturers on the nationwide list.
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall of about 1 million pool and spa drain covers on May 26 because they did not pass standards for handling the flow of water. The commission reported no incidents or injuries related to the pool grates.
All of the city’s regular pools are unaffected by the recall and remain open.
A list of models and dates sold of recalled drain covers is available on the Association of Pool & Spa Professionals website, www.apsp.org.
