Mountain West Conference shows off new logo
The Mountain West Conference unveiled its new logo today to mark its changing membership that includes the University of Hawaii in 2012.
The combination of block ‘M’ and ‘W’ letters, commissioner Craig Thompson said in a La Jolla, Calif. press conference, "is bold, it is strong (and) very different from any other conference."
The logo is nicknamed, "The Rock" and the tagline is "This is our time."
"This initiative is emblematic of the evolution of our league," Thompson said in a news release. "The overwhelming majority of the people we spoke to said the Mountain West is bold, feisty and highly competitive, and we strongly believe these qualities are reflected in our new brand identity and our new logo."
The MWC, little altered from its debut in 1999, changes drastically beginning July 1st with the addition of Boise State while Brigham Young will go independent and Utah joins the Pac-12. In 2012 UH, Fresno State and Nevada will join the MWC as Texas Christian goes to the Big East, giving the MWC a 10-member conference for football.

Thompson said, "it is a very corporate look, a very simple look, it is bold and it gives equal weight to both words, ‘mountain’ and ‘west" and we’re excited about it. It is gonna grow."
